Maybe you only want the prologue buzz again, not a wiped-out save. GTA 5 is kinder than that, and even if your wallet obsession sends you reading GTA 5 Money guides on the side, Story Mode progress can stay put.

Replay Mission Is Not A Real Restart
The big thing players miss is this: Replay Mission is a separate little run, not time travel. You open Pause, go to Game, then Replay Mission, and the game shows missions you've already finished. Pick one and you're dropped into that job with the objectives ready. Your current free-roam save doesn't suddenly roll back. Franklin's cash, Michael's houses, Trevor's chaos, all of that stays where it was. It's great for Gold Medals, heists, awkward driving bits, or just hearing old dialogue again without nuking your main file.
  • Open Story Mode, pause the game, then head into Game and choose Replay Mission.
  • Pick a completed mission from the list, then replay it as a contained attempt.
  • When it ends, return to your existing campaign state instead of an older timeline.

Starting Fresh Without Burning Your Old Save

If you want the whole story from the bank job onward, start a new game instead. That's the clean way. GTA 5 gives you multiple Story Mode save slots, so you don't need to act like it's 2006 and delete everything in a panic. Keep your finished file in one slot. Put the fresh run somewhere else. Sounds basic, yeah, but plenty of people overwrite the wrong save because they rush through menus. Manual saves are boring until they save you from losing a near-100 percent campaign.
  • Use one slot for your completed file, especially if you've got properties, stocks, or collectibles handled.
  • Use another slot for a fresh run, different choices, or replaying the story in order.
  • Save before major decisions, because replaying the mission won't rewrite your real campaign branch.
Reality check: If you overwrite the wrong Story Mode save, the game won't politely hand it back.

Heists, Side Jobs, And Stuff You Can't Always Redo
Heists and setups are usually the bit people care about. Replay Mission lets you run many of them again, which is perfect if you want the set piece, the gunfight, the getaway, or a cleaner medal. What it doesn't do is change your saved heist approach or crew history. Same deal with bigger choices near the end. Side missions are messier. Many Strangers and Freaks jobs can be replayed, and some map icons may return, but one-time ambient events can slip away. If something feels rare, make a save first.
  • Replay heists for practice, medals, or fun, not for changing the campaign's saved past.
  • Don't assume every random event returns, because some depend on timing or old world conditions.
  • Keep manual saves before endings, heist planning, and side content you're unsure about.

Keep It Simple And Don't Panic

The safe play is boring, but it works: replay missions when you want a quick hit, start a new slot when you want the full ride. If you're browsing GTA 5 Money for sale pages between sessions, just don't let save management become an afterthought.
